UNDERSTANDING CHIROPRACTIC CARE COMMON QUESTIONS ASKED ABOUT CHIROPRACTIC CARE
FAQ's
Is chiropractic safe and will it hurt to get adjusted?
Because chiropractic treatment is non-invasive and does not involve the use of pharmaceuticals, it is very safe. As we explain to our patients, MD's kill an average of 1,000,000 people per year with their treatment methods, though none were killed by chiropractors last year. Many times, chiropractic adjustments bring immediate relief. You may or may not experience side effects from the adjustment or therapies. If you do, they are usually limited to mild or moderate soreness lasting a day or two in a specific area.
My doctor/ friend said I can suffer from a stroke if I get care, what is my risk?
As with all medical treatment, there are risks involved. Current research indicates that a stroke for an adjustment is between 1 in every 5,000,000 to 8,000,000 (MILLION) adjustments. To put it into perspective, the odds of being struck by lightening in your lifetime is 1 in 3,000. When your doctor/friend tells you this, keep in mind that they are mis-educated as to chiropractic care.
Do MDs refer to chiropractors?
Some do and some don't, what we find is that MDs who have an educated understanding of chiropractic care refer to Doctors of Chiropractic quite often. Many hospitals around the country are hiring chiropractors to be on staff due to the positive outcomes when treating spinal pain. They are finding that chiropractic treatment decreases the need for pain medications and surgeries. In my experience, medical doctors who try to scare patients away from chiropractic care do it for one of two reasons- they have a complete misunderstanding of chiropractic care, and/or its about the money, they make big bucks treating back pain and doing surgeries. Unfortunately, the patient needlessly suffers.
Is it true that once you start going to a Chiropractor, you have to keep going back?
The easy answer is no, you will not need to keep coming back. Chiropractic care can be compared to medical care in that if your medical doctor prescribes a medication for you and instructs you to take a pill 2 times a day for 6 weeks, you will understand that if you take it once, your problem will not magically go away. The same is true with Chiropractic care. After your consultation, history, and exam, the doctor will recommend a course of treatment. Most likely, one treatment will not cure all that ails you, so the doctor will recommend a certain number of treatments. You will be re-assessed to see if additional care is needed. There are some patients that either have very repetitive occupations, re-injure themselves, and therefore choose to come back as they feel necessary. We also have many patients who understand that chiropractic helps them to keep their flexibility and improvements their overall health, who decide to treat once per month. Ultimately the decision is yours.
Athletes use chiropractors to stay well and perform better, not just for the occasional injury.
Athletes choose chiropractors because we are movement specialists. Chiropractors were spotted all over the Olympic coverage last year, and top athletes such as Michael Jordan, Tiger Woods, Michael Phelps, Tom Brady, Evander Holyfield, and Arnold Schwarzenegger, have all been proud patients of chiropractors. These days, it’s far more common than not for major athletes and sports teams to keep chiropractors nearby to help prevent injuries, speed injury recovery, improve balance and coordination, and give them a greater competitive edge.
How can a chiropractor help my pain?
Many patients that have pain in their joints, especially their spinal joints, they can be helped with chiropractic care. If you have spinal pain, most likely you have a joint in one of your 24 movable spinal joints that is not moving the way it should. Simply put, a chiropractor will find what joints are not moving in your spine and then use a manual maneuver to create movement in that joint. Once the joint is moving, most patients will have less pain in the joint. The adjustment will also decrease inflammation in the area and stimulate nerves in area to decrease the pain. It may take several treatments to strengthen and rehab your injured areas.
Chiropractic is for all ages.
Many seniors aren’t aware of the benefits of chiropractic care, which can help them not only with pain relief, but also increase range of motion, balance and coordination, and decrease joint degeneration. There’s no patient too young for chiropractic either! Chiropractors check infants moments after birth for mis-alignments of the spinal vertebrae that may occur as a result of the birth process. In addition to supporting overall health and well-being, parents also take their children to chiropractors to encourage healthy brain and nervous system development. Dr Miller and Dr. Tindall have been treating whole families for over 25 years.
Why should I choose chiropractic care for my back problem?
The answer is quite simple, because we are the experts in treating non-surgical spinal problems. This is what we went to college for and what we treat day in and day out. If the front end of your car was out of alignment, you wouldn't take it into a transmission shop? No, you would take it to a re-alignment expert!
Does your office only work on backs?
No, Dr Tindall is a chiropractic orthopedic specialist and has advanced training in treating whiplash injuries, knees, feet, elbows and other joints of the body. We also provide nutritional and naturopathic care in our office.
